Odyssey of Tears

In Odyssey of Tears, the colossal tragedy of Syria is told by a refugee woman staggering towards an elusive salvation perpetually out of reach to her and her ailing infant son. Hope, despair and fury possess her during her harrowing journey through Europe as part of a vast, pitiful caravan of migrants as the extent of her personal loss and suffering is revealed. As Abdulla grows weaker, she curses both the brutal murderers of ISIS and the western governments backing ‘moderate’ revolutionary insurgents with equal ferocity.

The story originally appeared in Issue Six of Sediments Literary Arts Journal in 2016, and was subsequently reprinted in Literally Stories in 2017 and again in 2019. In 2019 it was also chosen by Tulip Tree Publishing as its Story of the Week and reprinted by Malarkey Books for its Derelict Fiction site. It is dedicated to the people of Syria.
